In a surprising move shaking up the culture, BET has officially suspended both the BET Hip Hop Awards and the iconic Soul Train Awards not permanently, but indefinitely.

The announcement was confirmed by BET CEO Scott Mills, who cited the decision as part of a broader internal restructuring at the network. While Mills made it clear that the shows are not canceled forever, he noted they are being “reimagined for streaming or other platforms” as BET explores new strategies for engagement in the digital era.

This shift comes as BET, like many traditional media outlets, faces declining ratings and the challenge of adapting to today’s content-hungry, scroll-fast audiences. Award shows that once dominated television screens are struggling to compete with TikTok trends, real-time social media moments, and the rise of creator-driven content.

But make no mistake this isn’t just about low numbers . It’s about how our culture is evolving, and how the platforms built to celebrate us must evolve, too.

While the suspension stings, it also opens the door for innovation. Could we see the next generation of Hip Hop and Soul celebrations move to Netflix, YouTube, or even the metaverse? Could creators and indie curators step in to fill the gap?

BET says the shows will return but in what form? That remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the culture doesn’t pause. And neither do we.

At @PrettyHustlaz, we’ll be watching closely, amplifying the voices and stories that deserve to be seen, with or without a stage.
