Home Singer Songwriter R. Lyn talks to Pretty Hustlaz about her Charting Single, Motherhood and Body Positivity.

Afternoon R. Lyn, Thanks for having this conversation. Tell us more about your background and growing up in Boston.

Boston was really “clique-ish” and I never really fit in. Where I really blossomed was in college,  that’s where I was able to explore myself. I Went to school for International business, after I graduated while on the job my manager offered to teach me more about IT. I took that as an opportunity to move into my current role as a Senior IT Consultant.

How is it balancing such a demanding profession and still remaining creative?

By the time I’m done with my IT Job because it’s soo structured my music really allows for a creative outlet and allows me to open up. Music really just feeds your soul. No matter what you’re doing there is always a song that fits.

This is soo true, interestingly enough in addition to pursuing your Music career and maintaining a professional job… You’re also a Single Mom. What’s that like juggling it all?

It’s crazy because I never wanted kids. But my son really saved my life. I realized I had to become and love the best me in order to truly love my son. As soon as he was born I started singing to him. My son is my biggest supporter. He comes to the studio and rehearsals with me all the time.

I don’t make excuses! Even though I don’t have much help with my child I invest in myself. I don’t ask for handouts I pay for myself and own my music.I’m smart with my money and instead of buying brand name clothes I choose to send my son to private school and I bought my first house at age 25. My son is excited about all my milestones. It’s those amazing moments that make it worth it.

Speaking of milestones…you’ve been accomplishing quite a few of them. I mean DJ Self who’s becoming a legend in his own right gives his stamp of approval…and you’ve got to tell us what was it like getting verified?!

I cried when I got “verified”, I’ve worked my butt off! That verification symbolized to me that it’s proof of my work. I even had to go on a “commenting spree” so everybody could see my blue check. Meeting DJ Self he has helped me out soo much it’s really cool to have that legendary person in my corner. I can go to him about anything and he always gives great advice. He started playing my Single “Sugar Coated Murder” on the radio and now it’s Number 42 on the R&B Charts.

Well, you definitely are a “Hustla”, give us some tips for fellow Women on their Hustle.

Keep pushing don’t let failure stop you. Do not put an end goal on anything , because then you will stop once the goal is completed. You should always be pushing yourself to be greater!

For ‘Pretty Girls” what’s some advice on staying pretty?

Being a pretty girl starts on the inside. Being a “natural body “ girl it can be challenging. Sometimes I go on Instagram and see the “perfect bodies”  it made me think about plastic surgery. But I’m determined to try and do it the right way. Not that I’m against surgery. But, I hired a trainer and started drinking more water. You have to be content in yourself because this industry is continually changing. Soo many women have reached out to me on this journey and tell me I inspired them to begin to work out as well. Surgery is not always the answer.
