Yesterday, a photo appeared on dance hall artist Spice Instagram page. Mysteriously, all of Spice’s other pictures had disappeared. The photo was captioned “Nothing wrong with a fresh start right?” with instructions to pre-order her new mixtape “Captured.” Sounds like a normal post for an artist right? WRONG! In the picture Spice was unrecognizable.  She was extremely light as if she had bleached her skin. Within minutes, all of the blogs were talking about it. It gained thousands of likes rapidly. The comment section was going nuts with questions.  Had Spice, a woman who is known for loving her dark skin jumped the shark? While many expressed disgrace some dismissed the photo as Photoshop.  To counteract that claim, Spice posted a video and even went live showing of her new look and lighter skin. The Pretty Hustle Team discussed this in our chat. Being the media mavens and blogger baes we all are, we came to the conclusion that real or not, Spice had the world talking.

Well, since yuh seh that I’m too black for you I’ll please yuh, do I look how you want me to? Now I’m gonna see if you gonna say I’m too brown for you Or do I look pretty to you? – Spice

Fast forward to today, Spice posted a video clip to her Instagram. The caption read, Black People Hypocrisy official video is out. Turns out, Spice’s little stunt was for her art after all. Many of her fans rejoiced, saying they knew it wasn’t real, others were relieved, some of the very people that criticized her less than 24 hours before, had nothing to say today. Weather people want to admit it or not, this was a genius way for her to drop this powerful song and video.  In the song Spice gives us a look into her experience with colorism. She explains that being told you’re too dark doesn’t come from the white people that we call racist, but from our own race of people. This causes dark skinned women and girls to feel inferior. Although the delivery may be harsh to some the message is very real. Check out the video that caused the uproar below and let us know what you think!
